What they are and where they are used

Stand oil paints are traditional, oil-based coatings made from specially thickened plant oils (usually linseed oil) and mineral pigments. They form a durable, elastic film that penetrates the surface and provides long-lasting protection, particularly for wood and metal in building and renovation projects.

Application areas and historical background

Stand oil paints are primarily used on exterior and interior woodwork such as windows, doors, cladding, half-timbering, verandas, balconies and roof structures, as well as on suitably prepared steel and other ferrous metals. They are particularly valued in the restoration of listed and historic buildings, because their appearance and ageing behaviour are close to traditional coatings.

Historically, linseed oil paints evolved from simple linseed oil finishes that were improved by heating and “standing” the oil to increase viscosity and durability. By combining these stand oils with finely ground earth and mineral pigments, craftsmen created robust paints that have been used on buildings for centuries and are still appreciated today for their longevity and compatibility with traditional substrates.

Colour range and surface appearance

Stand oil paints are available from clear or translucent glazes through to fully opaque colours. Beeck offers white and a series of lightfast, monument-friendly tones based on mineral pigments (for example ochres, earth reds, umbers, greens and blues), which can also be mixed to match common colour systems such as NCS or RAL, as far as technically feasible.

Kreidezeit stand oil paints include special metallic shades such as gold and silver, using non-fading metallic pigments for stable, glossy effects on wood, steel and zinc. In practice, this allows both subtle, historically appropriate façades and expressive highlights on details like profiles, signs or decorative elements.

Advantages compared with conventional paints and varnishes

Stand oil paints offer several technical advantages over many conventional synthetic resin paints and varnishes. The coatings are diffusion-open and moisture regulating, so the substrate can continue to “breathe”, helping to keep wood dimensionally stable and reducing the risk of flaking and peeling. Instead of cracking, they weather gradually to a matte surface and can then be easily refreshed with maintenance coats.
Because of their high solid content and deep penetration, stand oil paints provide very good weather and UV resistance, especially on exterior woodwork. Resin-free formulations from manufacturers like Kreidezeit and Beeck also avoid typical problems of some alkyd systems and are well suited for ecologically oriented construction and sensitive restoration projects.

Processing and practical tips

Substrate preparation is crucial: new or weathered wood should be sanded (typically with medium grit) so that the surface is open enough to absorb the oil; resin pockets, loose old coatings or incompatible primers must be removed thoroughly. For exterior applications, highly absorbent end grain and cut edges are often pre-treated with suitable resin or base oils from the same system to ensure even absorption and protection (e.g. Beeck Oil Primer oder Wood Primer).

Stand oil paints are usually applied in thin coats by brush or roller; they should never be poured directly onto the surface but worked in evenly and sparingly. Typical processing conditions are at least 10 °C for a minimum of 48 hours, with good ventilation; at around 20 °C and 60 % relative humidity, the coating is usually dry and recoatable after approximately 24 hours, while full hardening can take several weeks depending on climate and substrate. Tools are cleaned with suitable plant-based solvents or balsamic turpentine, e.g. Kreidezeit Balsamic Turpentine.
